I have no idea how I would begin my story, so I ask for your forgiveness if the first thing I would tell you would be stuff about me.
My name is Juan Ramon Fontanilla Sereno. I am absolutely sure that none of you would remember my very long name so could just call me Ramon, or JR if you prefer it. But if I were you, just call me by the name Ramon because this is what most people address me. And take note, if you guys are not my parents or my older brother, never ever call me Jay, since it's only my family whom I gave the privilege of doing so. I hope you guys would understand. At this, I'm already indebted to you.
I was born on the 13th of October in the year 1992. Every year, during my birthday, we always have a small party for me, even if you can say that we are somewhat rich. But I would want this, nevertheless. I don't really fancy conversing with too many people in a very short amount of time, and it's not really my thing to socialize too much; this Mom and Dad already know very well.
If you would take a very good look at me, you could actually say that I'm a bit short for my age. I have fair skin, coffee-colored hair, mahogany-colored eyes, a small nose, and thin lips. My body also got a bit thinner than normal since I was sickly when I was still a small child, but there was nothing I could do back then. At first glance, you could probably say that I look like a little lamb. Well, maybe you're right, I do look like a meek, newborn lamb, but let me assure you that I could be anything but meek.
Last year before summer vacation has started, I have finally finished my studies as a Psychology student in a prestigious university. Because of this, you would presumably say that I am an intellectual monster. That is where you go wrong. Just like a normal guy, laziness often hits me when it's already time for me to study my lessons and I'm already contented with my passing grades just enough for me not to repeat my subjects. The only thing that gives me the inspiration and motivation for me to come to my senses and stop procrastinating is my dream since I was very young: to become a doctor.
When I was still a small child, I would easily get sick. Mom and Dad always brought me to the doctor back then. Even my big brother became very worried about me because he could rarely ask me out to play basketball with his clique. Because of the countless numbers of times I was brought to the doctor by Mom and Dad, I actually reached the point when I got scared of doctors. So one time, after another session with the pediatrician, while I was bawling my eyes out, I told this to my big brother:
"Hgk! When I grow up, I will become a doctor so I won't need to go to them the next time I get sick! Waaaah!"
I never really thought that I would actually study in a prestigious university in order to make this dream of mine come true. Talk about being back with a vengeance. That is why sometimes during this summer vacation, I often had to go back to the university to make the necessary arrangements, payments, and other processes for my admission to the Department of Medicine after resting for a year when I finished my Degree in Psychology. It wasn't exactly a walk in the park, and it hit me that things would get even more difficult once I get admitted.
Let us talk about something else, this time. Maybe you guys would start thinking that I am really studious and all that just because I was able to enter Medicine school. Again, this is where I tell you that you've got that wrong. If I'm not doing anything inside the apartment complex we live in, I often shut myself in our room, or what my big brother affectionately call 'my den,' reading a few books, like Lemony Snicket's and The Hunger Games. I also watch some movies and anime or play video games like The Legend of Zelda.
If I would tell you something about me that I could be proud of, that would be my talent in writing. I started writing when I was in the fourth grade in elementary school when my teacher made me join a writing contest. A lot of people were extremely surprised when I actually won first place at the said competition. Because of this, when I already entered high school, I almost immediately became the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper even though I was still merely a sophomore. I got famous all around our region because I actually emerged victorious in a national schools press conference that was held at Lapu-lapu City, Cebu. It is for this reason that I never lost my passion for writing, even though I have my plans to become a doctor straightened out. This, however, didn't help to improve my physical health because I rarely get the necessary exercise.
"You know, Jay, if you always shut yourself in your den all day long, mushrooms would start growing on your head," joked my big brother when I refused to go and play table tennis with him in the garage one time.
Since I already mentioned my big brother a number of times, let me take this opportunity to introduce him also. He is Marcos Hector Fontanilla Sereno, born on the 3rd of November, 1986. Mom and Dad are the only ones who can call him 'Marky.' I tried it once, and I regretted it almost immediately, since what I got from it is a punch on the forehead. From then on, I just called him 'Chuck,' which is also the name of one of the characters in his favorite Pokemon game. He's got a lean body because of hours and hours of playing basketball. In fact, he is the captain of their basketball team when we were still in elementary and high school. He was also always the MVP of their team. Because of this, a lot of girls have started to hang out with him. But I remain puzzled as to why he had a decent relationship only a couple of years ago.
If you look at us for the first time, you could see that both of us are chips from the old block: the eyes, nose, mouth, and hair. You would only know if you're looking at Chuck because he has a lean build, he's well-postured, and he has some decently big muscles, while I'm a lot thinner and I have this forward lean when I stand up. From afar, you could easily mistake Chuck for a shaved panda because of his size. I also have longer hair than him because he makes it a point to have a barber's cut regularly while I only have my hair trimmed every three months.
Just like your normal, ordinary brothers, we also have our quarrels, but they're basically about small things. We never have really serious arguments because in a way, we do understand each others' feelings, and of course, Mom and Dad are there to break the fight once things do come out of hand.
Before I forget, I would also like to introduce Mom and Dad to you. The man of the house is Jose Alejandro Aldama Sereno; half-Filipino, half-Mexican. He often goes by the name 'Alex.' When it comes to heredity, it was from him whom Chuck and I inherited our coffee-colored hair and thin lips. Other than that, he's got blue eyes, a slightly sharp nose, a few freckles on his cheeks, and a slightly smaller build than Chuck. But you wouldn't think that a man as large as him would only be a quiet and timid guy that rarely get angry and always keeps his cool. He is a famous lawyer who graduated in the same university I'm entering and he often handles cases that other lawyers would normally refuse.
The light of our home is Maria Carmela Fontanilla Sereno, or better known by her friends and workmates as 'Maricar.' It is from her whom Chuck and I inherited our eyes and nose. She also has fair skin, black hair, normal thickness of lips, and a bit taller than the average Filipina. She is the current principal of the elementary school where Chuck and I graduated. This is probably the reason why both of us were never bullied by anyone, even by those you would consider the most violent thugs. She might seem strict at first, and yes she really is strict when it comes to school rules, but she knows that all this is for work.
But even though Mom and Dad work their backs off, we still always find the time to have bonding moments and take some rest, and Chuck and I never felt left out by them.
By now, you might be puzzled about what's special about my story. If you would assess the things I've said so far, you'd conclude that I really am a normal guy in his early twenties that has been blessed with a loving family, a semi-rich lifestyle, and just enough diligence and perseverance in order to graduate from a difficult course and trek the path towards becoming a full-pledged doctor. I also fancy normal things. If you would take a look, most of my fancies can be found at the top of today's list of popular things, so we might get along pretty well when it comes to these things. Yes, all of these are definitely true. All of these.
Except for that part where I said I am 'normal.'
Before our grandfather, Pacito Fontanilla, or better known as 'Granddad Pancho' if you're one of his grandchildren, passed away, he had a word with me alone. I was ten years old back then. He told me that what he's about to tell me is absolutely important, so I listened very well.
He told me, "Child, as you can see, I am nearing my death. So -"
"Granddad, please don't say that. You know that's not true. You would still see me become a doctor. You would still see Chuck become an engineer," I told him.
Granddad breathed heavily. "Please child, you need to listen to what I am about to say."
"I'm listening, Granddad," I answered.
"Child, in every generation of our family, one of you will be given an ability. An ability that might do you good, or do you harm," he said, while trying to catch his breath.
"Granddad, please take it easy, What do you mean by that?" I asked.
"Alas, I could not tell you this directly, but in time, you will know about this," he answered weakly.
This is where I got confused. "I-I'm sorry? How would I know if you wouldn't tell me?"
Granddad raised his hands to reach for his pendant around his neck, then made me wear it. The pendant was made out of violet-colored stone that was carved like a dove and was tied with a black cord.
"Get any reading material that has a story. Father told me that only your elder brother would be able to have this ability. Sadly, he refused to accept it and he wished me to bequeath this to you, instead. As I said, I couldn't tell you how this works, but you'll find it out in time."
He held my cheek and smiled. "Goodbye, my child."
At this, his hand fell on the bed. I didn't know what to do at this time. I just started to cry because for all I knew, Granddad was gone.
From that night, I have always worn the pendant Granddad Pancho gave me, but I really haven't have the faintest idea of how to use the ability he was talking about, or whether I was sure I would want to use this ability or not. From what I remember, he only told me to get a reading article in order for this to work. This is still not enough for me to determine what I would do. It actually didn't cross my mind to ask Chuck about this since for all I know, he has a very good reason why he didn't accept this from Granddad.
I only found out how to work it when I was already fifteen years old. I was then studying my lesson on Jose Rizal's life when I suddenly fell asleep while wearing the pendant. To cut the long story short, I got tossed in the life story of Jose Rizal and I have lived there for years. When I finally came to, it's as if time hasn't passed by in the real world and I reverted back to my young self. Well, time did pass, but it's as if I only dozed off for a few minutes, unlike the time I spent in that dimension. I couldn't explain how it happened. I also don't think I would tell you all about it in the near future because it's not like I really enjoyed what happened to be back there before I could return to the real world. I have never tried it again ever since.
Well, that would be what's so special about me. I could enter any story anytime I please. You wouldn't say that this is a superpower. I wasn't really a fan of superheroes, anyway; I think they use their superpowers too much over pretty simple things, but this is just my opinion, of course. I think I would prefer to have an almost useless power, but with enough creativity, you could do awesome stuff, right? One's creativity can come out when one is given limits, I believe.
