MINIKOM CHALLENGE

Minikom is an online 10-week event (July to September 2024) in Webkom exclusively for beginner creators where they can create their dream webkomik in a smaller scale with support from other creators and artists.

  • 1 page a week for 10 weeks
  • finished story with an intro-body-resolution format
  • quality doesn't matter as long as it is finished and is understandable to others
  • participants can pass pages without render, color or ink, in traditional or digital format
  • participants will be doing their work solo, not as collab, but with support from fellow beginner artists

This is not a competition or a race. There are no judges, prizes (?) nor slots. The only goal is to finish on time, and the person you'll only be competing against is yourself.

This is for all artists who wants to start and just need a little help along the way.

MINIKOM 2024 officially begins in July 7, 2024. Make sure to read the full blog before asking further questions.

FAQs

WHY 10 WEEKS?

In the traditional comic industry, a small 8-page mini-comic is used by artists to pitch their ideas in comic convetions, 9 pages is long enough to contain a finished story and small enough for a beginner without much experience to finish, adding the cover and backcover with synopsis makes it 10 pages.

HOW MANY PANELS PER PAGES?

Ideally 4-6 panels in a page, more than 6 will be too small. That said, you can go for less or more if it helps the story forward.

HOW TO SUBMIT?

There will be a scheduled weekly post every sunday at 8am for 10 weeks of the vent. In each Facebook post, leave a comment of the required page or information asked.

HOW ABOUT IF I'M DOING IT ON LONG-SCROLL FORMAT LIKE IN WEBTOON, TAPAS, ETC?

Same rule of a 4-6 panels in one week post, or 40 panels in total by the end of the event. If you plan to post in online in scroll format and each chapter contains more than 6 panels, just submit (comment on Facebook post) 6 panels on the first week, then the following panels on the second week, and so on. It must have a minimum of 40 panels in total.

WHAT IF I DO STRIPS AND NOT A STORY-CENTERED COMIC?

Strips are fine, just pass 8 of them (weeks 2-4) with additional cover illustration on week 10.

CAN TRADITIONAL ARTISTS JOIN? or I DON'T HAVE A TABLET or ONLINE ACCESS, CAN I JOIN?

Yes, just do it on paper, take a picture of your komik's page to submit every week.

CAN I JOIN IF THE EVENT ALREADY STARTED? or CAN I POST LATE?

Yes, as long as the event is still ongoing, you can catch up to do the pages, you can submit late pages on their respective Webkom Facebook posts, the deadline of all pages will be on the last week (September10, 2024).

DOES THE FINISHED MINI-KOMIK NEED TO BE POSTED IN OTHER PLATFORMS?

No, the only required form for this event is dropping a comment on the Facebook post of your finished page under the weekly post in Facebook. Paricipants can post their work on their respective Webkom accounts and platforms if they wish to.

WILL THERE BE PRIZES?

This is not a competition and quality is not the basis of this event, that said, the Webkom president will reserve a slot in "Rambulan" (monthly Webkom event) for the one with the best MiniKomik entry.

WILL THIS BE A REGULAR EVENT?

It will depend on the success of the first one and by popular demand.

THINGS to KEEP in MIND

  • Feel free to change styles, rendering, colors, while the event is ongoing. Do not aim for perfection. This is an experimentation phase meant for beginner creators to get used to the process of creating from start to finish.
  • It does not need to be rendered, it just needs to be understandable enough if ever you want to show it to others for review or constructive criticism. This does not include very rough sketches or drafts that only you can understand or requires explanation of the world, characters or lore.
  • While it is not strictly required, it is advisable to do it in paper (in comic form) even for webomics and digital artiusts. By having a limited canvas, you will be forced to keep only the necessary information and train yourself on flow and direction of panels and speech bubbles. Remember, you can't draw it digitally if you can't draw it on paper.
  • There will be an official Minikom Group Chat for all paticipants. Admin Jay Kell will only add those who had posted complete week 1 information when the event opens.
